Atefeh Mehraein, Psychodynamic Psychotherapist
“Our sense of self is formed in relationship, and so too are many of our struggles. Therapy creates a space to explore questions of shame, belonging, identity, and connection, so that new ways of being with ourselves and others can emerge.”

I am a qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist, with over 10 years of experience across a range of mental health settings, including acute psychiatric services in the NHS, Mind, East London NHS Foundation Trust, Camden Psychotherapy Unit (CPU) and Doctors Without Borders.
I work with adults experiencing a wide range of emotional and relational difficulties, including anxiety, depression, shame, low self-esteem, difficulties in relationships, questions around identity and belonging, and periods of feeling stuck or overwhelmed. I also work with difficulties around being in groups and finding one’s place within them, whether in friendships, families, or at work.
I offer weekly psychotherapy sessions where there is space to think carefully about the difficulties you may be experiencing and the patterns that may be getting in the way of growth or change. Together, we can look at the more tucked-away layers of the mind that may be contributing to these difficulties. Much of our inner life exists outside conscious awareness, and unconscious feelings, conflicts and expectations constantly influence how we think, feel and relate to others. Part of the work involves becoming more aware of these patterns and understanding how earlier experiences and relationships may still be shaping the present. As these connections become clearer, it becomes possible to respond differently rather than repeatedly finding ourselves in the same emotional or relational situations. Psychodynamic therapy is not usually about quick solutions, but about developing a deeper understanding of oneself that can support more lasting change.
Alongside my clinical work, I write on psychoanalytic themes and contribute writing to conferences. My interests include the relationship between creativity and disturbance and the symbolic and emotional life of memory. I am currently writing a book exploring shame and friendship.
My way of working is collaborative and attentive to complexity, including experiences that may be difficult to understand or put into words. I offer psychotherapy in both English and Farsi (Persian).
I trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and continued my clinical training at the Manor House Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling, where I qualified. These two schools have given me a particular way of thinking about human experience, both at the level of the individual and the individual as part of a group. I also hold a BA in Philosophy and an MA in Psychoanalytic Studies.
